How Can We Minimise Landfill Waste?
In the UK alone it is thought that we dispose of at least 770,000 double-decker amounts of waste in landfill. That is an insane amount! The best thing we can do is divert as much waste as possible, hopefully, these tips can reduce those drastic numbers.
Recycle
Make sure that you do as much recycling as possible, we all know which items should and shouldn’t be in your general waste bins. It’s estimated that 80% of our waste could actually be recycled, how much do you think ends up in the correct bins at your home? Make conscious decisions on which items go in general or recycled waste bins.
Upcycle
Recycling breaks rubbish down and re-used for other things, upcycling is making other uses out of the same item. An example of this is re-decorating a drawer to re-use in a different room. It’s the same item, just given an extra life. This can be especially useful with furniture or appliances, when used regularly it could lower landfill drastically.
Donate
With the help of social media, we have lots of networks to donate items we no longer need. Facebook, Gumtree, Ebay, Shpock, and a whole load more, all you need to do is take a photo of your item and create a listing to donate to others more in need. Again, furniture could be a huge factor here as lots of people like to upcycle, if you don’t have the time or patience for it, somebody else will!
Repair
As a nation, we are quick to throw away and replace items that break, especially with the number of new models we are tempted with. When trying to lower landfill waste, repairing your things could really help. They may even be cheaper than replacing them entirely!
We all know how our world has been in danger with the rising population and the amount of rubbish we produce. Do your best to reduce the amount of waste you throw away by following these tips. If every person did a few of these, we’d see a drastic change.
